Humble Pie

Humble Pie

Humble Pie — © Copyright 2011 by William Beem

Another Photo Concept day and I’m still trying to work out my ideas. The phrase “humble pie” popped in my mind, and I have absolutely no explanation for it at all. Just as quickly, this concept appeared. I also had another idea that would’ve required a model, preferably someone young and comfortable bowing her head in prayer, but decided that it takes more time to find and coördinate a shoot with someone than it does to just get a red gingham tablecloth and make a place setting.

Part of me wondered if using text in the image was cheating my intent — to communicate an idea with a photograph. Then I figured, what the hell. Some photos have text, some don’t. This one does.

At least, that’s what I thought. I couldn’t find a red gingham tablecloth. I even went to the local fabric store (where help is also hard to find) and couldn’t find any checkerboard cloth at all. In a pinch, I decided to check iStockPhoto and I fount this background. I originally thought that I’d expand the pie to cover up the plate, but decided that I liked it this way when I put them together. At least this way, I don’t have to stuff a red gingham tablecloth away somewhere. I don’t even own a dinner table.

Oh, and the pie didn’t taste bad, either.
