Big Edge - Canoe Sculpture in City Center, Las Vegas

Big Edge - © Copyright 2009 by William Beem

I think this was my second HDR image while I was first trying it out in Las Vegas last December.  Hand-held.  I see a plethora of mistakes.  Some I wouldn’t make anymore.  Sadly, some I would still make today if I were in a rush.  For the life of me, I still don’t comprehend this thing as a sculpture or work of art but…there it is.

As you know, having left a kind comment, I also did an HDR image of this sculpture. I see little to criticize in your technique; you’ve made a fine image.

A for whether this mass of canoes is “Art,” I have no opinion. My usual definition of art is simple: something made by the hand of man. Whether “The Last Supper” or a coffee mug which says “Cap Cod Boy,” it’s all art to me. I suppose if the structure pictured here were built by an eccentric Iowa farmer in his lower forty, the , “Art” intelligentsia would, at best, think it some quaint bit of vernacular folk “art.” But since some rich folks paid a handsome sum to put in by their big ugly buildings, I guess it would, with those folks, be “Art.” Really, I don’t care.

I think we all are probably harsher critics of our own work than anyone else is, so I appreciate your words.

I think Big Edge is visually interesting, but I just don’t get it in relationship to City Center. You have this cold, urban collection of buildings and then this “sculpture” that looks more appropriate for the parking lot off an Eddie Bauer Outlet or Bass Pro Shops store. It just seems completely out of context to me, but maybe that’s what she wanted.
