Soaring — © Copyright 2012 by William Beem

So many planes, so many places to go. So many destinations left behind. I saw that glider on the top of the hangar and it reminded me of Soarin’ at Epcot. It’s a very popular ride with a very long wait. Once you’re there and strapped into your chair, everyone in the audience is lifted up and flown across the landscape of the country. You feel the breeze, your feet dangle and it seems like a perilous reality that you could plummet a long way down.

It’s all an illusion, though. Sure, you could plummet, but it’s not far to the hard, concrete floor below.

The seats on Soarin’ could be just a little deeper. I guess I’ve gotten used to them, but the first few times I rode it did feel a bit precarious. You wouldn’t fall as far as from a real glider — but it would still be far enough!
