Today is a national holiday in the USA commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. That's no small measure in itself, as the only two other people to warrant a national holiday for their birthday are George Washington and Christopher Columbus.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial
The memorial is one of my favorites in Washington, D.C. I came across it unexpectedly and it's absolutely stunning. Solid granite and imposing. The likeness of Dr. King towers over everyone, which is very symbolic of the impact the man made on all of us.
It's no surprise the movie Selma was released around this time of year. Like most biopics from Hollywood, I imagine there are equal parts of truth and fantasy in the film. Movie makers never let facts get in the way of entertainment, since that's how they make money.
Just the same, it's a good reminder that this national holiday has a bit more meaning than the fact that the Federal government has the day off. All of our lives changed because of his simple and potent message.
I'll be back tomorrow with another post. Today, enjoy the time off if you have it and remember what it really means.
