After a couple of years of use, I decided it was time for a Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 review. I also bought the Freeway Longhaul 50, but I’ll cover that in a separate review.

Although Think Tank Photo is primarily known for its outstanding camera bags, we saw a pair of Freeway Longhaul carryall duffel bags launched on Kickstarter in 2020 – which met its financial goal in only 2 hours.

That’s a testament to the Think Tank Photo brand’s reputation for high-quality materials and the ability to organize your gear.

What is the Freeway Longhaul?

The Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 is a versatile and hard-working carryall duffel bag for organizing your things on a trip.

On our road trips, my wife and I always reach for the Freeway Longhaul 75. The zippered top cover tucks away, giving superior visibility to the contents. The cover tucks into a small pocket when not in use to protect the contents.

Think Tank is well known for its customizable divider system in a camera bag, so you get the same benefit of customizable dividers here. There are divider pockets that can keep small items safe.

You get three interior dividers with the Longhaul 75. A smaller divider works between the two larger dividers to create a cross-section in the center of the duffel.

If you’re expecting yet another camera bag from Think Tank Photo, this ain’t it. This is very clearly a travel or gear bag for everyone from soccer moms to beachgoers. It has numerous pockets on the outside.

Its durable water-repellant coating and rugged bottom mean you can drag it out in nature and protect the items inside.

When empty, the bag folds flat, so it doesn’t take up much space. You can carry it using the padded shoulder strap or straps like a tote bag.

Overall, it’s a well-crafted carryall duffel to keep your gear organized in one duffel to take wherever the road leads you.

Freeway Longhaul 75 Bag Features

Now that we’ve looked at the specs let’s take a look at the Freeway Longhaul features that make this bag worth owning.

1: Zippered Top Cover

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review-Zippered Top Cover

One of the key features of the bag is the full-view top opening. You can easily identify the contents because the cover opens fully. You don’t need to grab a flashlight and fumble around inside to get what you need.

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review -Cover Pocket

The zippered top cover tucks away in a hidden pocket to keep the large flap from interfering with your access.

2: Multiple Shoulder Strap Positions

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - Padded Shoulder Strap

The padded shoulder strap connects easily to one of the D rings on the bag. It’s useful for heavier loads or keeping your hands free while you carry the bag.

One of the useful features of the Freeway Longhaul 75 is that there are six D rings, giving you multiple shoulder strap positions. They’re also useful for attaching a carabiner or other clip-on items.

3: King of the Tote Bags

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - Tote Straps

This carryall duffel has straps to use individually or with a padded handle. You also get grab handles on each side of the bag.

That means it’s always easy to grab something to carry or pull the bag holding your gear. All of these possibilities shame other tote bags, giving superior carrying options, so it conveniently transports your things.

4: Front Zippered Pocket

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - Front Zippered Pocket

Every bag should have a place to conveniently access items you need, like keys, a wallet, or a phone.

The dimensional front zippered pocket stands out a bit to have space to hold the gear you want at your fingertips.

5: Interior Dividers

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - Interior Dividers

You get three interior dividers with different options to configure them.

I’ve added two large dividers in the photo above to create three sections on the bag. There’s a smaller divider you can use between the large dividers. Notice the Velex hook material on the bag and the side of the large divider.

The smaller divider can connect horizontally between the two large dividers if you place the Velex hook material inward.

The other side of the two large dividers includes a pocket.

The pockets are useful for papers, maps, or flat items.

The Velex hook material is strong and sticky. Installing them in the bag can be frustrating. I’ve found the best technique is first to attach them to the bottom of the bag.

For the walls, start attaching the Velex at the bottom and work your way up to ensure a good fit.

6: Exterior Pockets

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - Exterior Pockets

This bag has more exterior pockets than the Freeway Longhaul 50. There are mesh pockets on one end and full fabric pockets on the other.

There is a flat pocket on the side (shown in front), and we’ve already mentioned the zippered one on the opposite side of this photo.

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - End pockets

The end pockets are the same size. The small pocket can hold a water bottle larger than this standard 500 ML example. You’ll be fine with a HydroFlask or Yeti bottle here.

The larger pocket shows a pair of women’s size nine trail running shoes, and there’s still more space.

The mesh pockets on the opposite side are great if you have a wet towel you don’t want inside the bag or just something where you want visibility.

7: Durable and Protective Bottom

Think Tank Freeway Longhaul 75 Review - Durable Bottom

The bottom of the Freeway Longhaul has an extra durable and protective material to protect the contents from moisture and debris. It also lets you carry heavier loads without worrying the bottom will fall out.

How to Use the Freeway Longhaul 75

With a name like Freeway Longhaul, I expect they intended people to use this for road trips or to organize things in their cars. It’s certainly great for that, but it can do much more.

  • Save space by gathering miscellaneous items in one bag
  • Use it for day trips to the beach or a park
  • It’s a great tote bag for athletic and sporting events
  • One big picnic basket!
  • A big toy box for trips
  • I hide my wife’s Christmas presents before wrapping them in this thing
  • Road safety gear

Ultimately, it’s a place for your stuff that you can carry with you.

What’s Missing from the Freeway Longhaul 75?

As I mentioned earlier, this is not intended to protect your camera gear. It doesn’t have padding to protect its contents.

If you want to use this for photography gear, you will do well to get some camera cubes that offer protection for your bodies and lenses and then organize them within the duffel.

One other thing I’d like to see would be compression straps inside the duffel. It’s not critical, but it would be a nice feature to secure clothing or other items from bouncing around.
